USMMA Postpones Parent’s Weekend
KINGS POINT, N.Y. July 15, 2020 - The U. S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point announced today that the annual Parent’s Weekend, normally hosted at the Academy during the month of September, is postponed until further notice.
“This was a difficult decision and one we reached out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of the Regiment of Midshipmen, the Academy community, and our midshipmen families,” said Rear Admiral Jack Buono, Academy Superintendent.
The annual event normally offers parents the opportunity to visit their plebes, and get to know the Academy, including visiting academic classes, living quarters, and sporting events, along with a number of staff presentations, a parade and the ceremony of Beat Retreat. In addition, the plebe class normally enjoys a night of liberty (a night away from campus) during the weekend.
“We will continue to monitor the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and will evaluate the possibility of conducting Parent’s Weekend at a later date,” said Buono. “All options are being considered and we look forward to providing more information in the future.”
Midshipman authorization to leave campus (liberty) has also been affected by the pandemic. “At this point, we have not made any decisions on academic year liberty periods, including during the normal Parent’s Weekend timeframe,” said CAPT Mikel Stroud, Commandant of Midshipmen. “We will continue to evaluate the options for future liberty periods and will keep the midshipmen informed of our decisions.”
Postponing Parents Weekend is the second major fall event affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent joint announcement with the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation, the annual homecoming celebration was also cancelled.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces.
