Dr. Ping Furlan Honored by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society

KINGS POINT, N.Y., Oct 20, 2020 -- Dr. Ping Furlan, Professor of Math and Science at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, is the recipient of the American Chemical Society’s New York Section 2020 Outstanding Service Award. The purpose of the award, according to Ruben Savizky, the 2020 Chair of the New York Section, is to “recognize the efforts of members of the New York Section who provide their time, leadership skills and dedicated service in promoting quality programs that contribute to the excellence of the Section.” Dr. Furlan’s selection was announced on Sunday.
Dr. Furlan will be presented a plaque in recognition of the 2020 award at the New York Section's General Meeting and Section-wide Conference in January, 2021. She will become a member of the Outstanding Service Award Committee for four years. Dr. Furlan was named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society in 2019.

Among her activities for the American Chemical Society’s New York Section this year, Dr. Furlan is the organizer of National Chemistry Week. A virtual education event for students of all ages, National Chemistry Week began October 18th and runs through October 24th. There is a special on-line event in conjunction with National Chemistry week that is scheduled for October 25th.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Academy, which was established under the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, as the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1943. It is administered by the Maritime Administration under the auspices of the Department of Transportation.
